What Customers Say About APC BR1500LCD 1500VA 865 Watts 8 Outlets BACK-UPS:

Haven't had a power outage yet but I'm ready for it now. This UPS works as advertised and is a good looking unit. Fits well with my other electronics in the den.

This means the Dell server would effectively get reset while running every two weeks plus every time there was a power failure. I am a computer consultant. They have a "white box" clone server and a Dell Power Edge 800, and purchased two of these units, one for each server, because the power in their office had been unreliable. Good thing they have some phone equipment that really needed a UPS so this BackUPS unit will have some place to go.

The problem occurred even when the Dell server (480W power supply) was the ONLY item connected. In short, if you need backup power for a modern, name-brand server, all of which use PFC power supplies, you should just save the hassle and properly protect your gear with a SmartUPS unit. That is what this client is going to end up having to do anyway. Don't go thinking you can just buy a BackUPS with higher VA rating either, as that does not matter at all. The SmartUPS series uses *TRUE* sine wave output when on battery.

We switched which unit was on which server, and still saw the issues. They also stated that some power supplies with PFC have issues with the "simulated sine wave" output provided by these BackUPS units. We always recommend APC SmartUPS products for our clients to use with the servers, but one client balked at the price of those units in the power rating they needed. Worse still, the APC software stated that the unit passed the self-tests, and did not report any problems, making it hard to track down.Extensive discussions with APC support indicated that newer power supplies, especially those which support PFC (Power Factor Correction) might have these types of problems during the switching to battery.

The software which comes with these units also runs a self-test every two weeks. We constantly saw "unexpected shutdown" messages on the Dell server. Come to find out, while doing a self-test on the unit connected to the Dell server, that during the line power to battery power transition, the Dell would "freak out" and reboot.

APC/Amazon had the answer. you can't play with it, but it WILL protect you from the evil electrons that may enter and leave your house without warning. If you care about your investment (computers, TVs, stereos, entertainment systems, etc). I have always liked APC products. I got tired of that and decided it was time to buy another one. it just sits under the table. you don't really need that info. I searched reviews high-and-low (& prices, too).

I experience quite a few power outages and power bumps in our area, and it (in my opinion) is absolutley a necessity to have my equipment protected by a UPS system.I know it isn't very fun to buy things like this. I have a lot of money invested in a music studio and it is well worth the money for the protection that these items bring to the table.

HEY, how 'come it's cheaper now.Anyway, the LCD red backlit display is very informative. this unit does the job well.

I had another backUps that was starting to die (after 12-years and a couple of battery changes). Free shipping on such a heavy beast is a great deal.If you want peace of mind for gear protection .

get one before you regret it.GMB I paid $198.23.

(but it looks cool).

But hey, that's a software enhancement, not hardware. Might be nice if the software that comes with it could email you that there's a problem. I like it. Yeah I was amazed how much stuff will run off of this. I have two PC's, two monitors, DSL modem, cable modem and a hub running on it with no problem.

As far as I can tell, none of the consumer grade UPS systems from APC provide Trim support; only the more expensive commercial units do._____________________________________________________APC's response:Thank you for contacting APC's email support on 04/21/2009 12:21 PM. Below is their response and my question.Should you be concerned. Mixed feelings since I've read several posts which indicate that modern power supplies are designed to protect themselves. A great unit; however, the product description and one of the reviews from 2007 are incorrect when they state this unit can protect from a voltage over-run condition. I would be happy to assist you.BX1500LCD model has only Boost mode._____________________________________________________________My question:Does the XS series provide both Boost and Trim support.(ie, BX1500LCD)The product manual indicates that only Boost is supported:[.].However, the product description as well as your knowledge database, entry 2877, says both Boost and Trim is supported.Lastly, I read this on the web which indicates only Boost is supported.[.]. It does provide a Boost function to protect from a voltage under-run. This unit does not support the voltage Trim function, where the UPS protects from a small voltage over-run condition. Since there is conflicting information on APC's site, I submitted a question to the vendor.
